WHERE DID LIPSTICK ORIGINATE? from
Egyptians...
to BGGTH!

BGGTH challenges you to find a woman who has not worn lipstick at least once in her life. It's probably impossible.

Among a vast range of different colours and textures, it is an indispensable object of our everyday life, what we call a MUST HAVE.

BUT WHERE DID LIPSTICK ORIGINATE? Let's find out together, the STORY is fascinating!

HUNTING FOR THE ORIGINS OF LIPSTICK

The term lipstick, etymologically speaking, comes from red pigment that was created and probably applied to the face.

Its origins are not precise; when there are no historical sources, it is difficult to guess. What we do know is that the first traces of the product appeared around 3500 BC in southern Mesopotamia. Stones with an intense and warm colour were in fact crushed and then worked using what the land and fire offered. Even its primordial purpose is uncertain - perhaps it was used for special occasions or religious rituals? This mystery intrigues us.

Many years later, thanks to the Ptolemaic dynasty, there was a real breakthrough that TURNED LIPSTICK into an IMPORTANT OBJECT of BEAUTY. It is said that Cleopatra used it all the time and that it was created by crushing insects and mixing them with waxes and oils.

However, history is never simple and sometimes takes the wrong turn. From being a symbol of beauty in the ancient world, during the Middle Ages there was a total change of course: COLOURED LIPS began to be associated with amoral, unkind, witchy, even heretical women, a symbol of the devil. This notion lasted for a long time, until QUEEN ELIZABETH I OF ENGLAND, in the 17th century, began to wear it, thus making it a real item of status.

AND DID ALL WOMEN LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER WITH LIPSTICK?

Not quite! From the seventeenth century onwards, in fact, LIPSTICK STRUGGLED TO ESTABLISH ITSELF and reach all women. Quintessentially the object of desire that makes you feel WOMANLY, it then developed, century after century, into a multitude of meanings that are still important today.

Depending on the place and historical period, in fact, its visual statement was a sign of seduction, a declaration of social status, a sign of revolt, protest, equal rights, a demonstration of wealth or an indication of confidence.

A real "SYMBOL" used to declare:

I am no less than you, Man,
I EXIST!!

This is why, in the 20th century, ADOLF HITLER BANNED IT, CALLING IT A THREAT. Consequently, its significance grew stronger, becoming an expression of patriotism as well as a distinctive feature of the suffragettes.

CURIOSITY?

ELIZABETH ARDEN, founder of the historic, eponymous makeup brand, DISTRIBUTED THOUSANDS OF LIPSTICKS during the suffragettes' long march down Fifth Avenue in New York..

Also the packaging, like its contents, has not always been the same; over the centuries it evolved while still maintaining a coherence. The 'bullet' shape was invented by the Egyptians, but only with JAMES BRUCE MASON JR in 1923 was the cap and twist system patented, transforming it into a true ready-to-wear must-have, to be carried in your handbag at all times in order to be the woman you want to be.
